Private keys are generated and stored inside the chip — they never leave it. Even if your computer is infected by malware, the malware cannot extract your keys from the Secure Element chip.

In May 2023, Ledger launched Ledger Recover — an optional paid service ($9.99/month) that allows users to back up their seed phrase in encrypted form in the cloud, split into three fragments held by three custodians: Coincover, EscrowTech and Ledger. The stated goal: to allow users to recover their funds if they lose their seed phrase.
This launch triggered a major controversy in the crypto community. The reason: the firmware update accompanying Recover proved that Ledger's Secure Element chip is technically capable of exporting key material via software. Many users had previously believed this was physically impossible. Ledger maintains that Recover requires explicit consent and that no key is exported without user initiation.
